Electrical muscular stimulation or “e-stim” for short, is a great modality for most pain. Four pads are placed on the body in locations determined by the doctor based on your condition. The machine sends an electrical current through the attached pads causing a tingly sensation. The intensity is increased within the comfort level of the individual receiving treatment. The tingling should be strong but not uncomfortable. Interferential current utilized means there are two different currents that run through the pads. They cross in the middle causing interference with one another. This interference is what allows the healing of the tissue. This modality penetrates deep beneath the skin to increase blood flow to injured areas and stimulate injured muscles decreasing overall healing time. The sensation that is felt can help the body release endorphins, the body’s natural pain reliever. It also blocks the transmission of the pain signal by the stimulation of local nerves giving a pain reducing effect.
